The independent reading book that I am reading is Under the Jolly Roger by L.A. Meyer. It is about a girl of 15 by the name of Jacky Faber. She escapes from a boarding school and boards a whaling ship bound for London to search for her beloved Jaimy. But when she finds him, hes holding hands with a beautiful young woman. She jumps to conclusions and runs away. In the process is mistaken for a man in her costume and is pressed into service for the king on one of his ships. When she is taken aboard against her will, Jacky thwarts the advances of its crazy captain and when he dies of a heart attack she gains possession of the ship and rallies the sailors to her side. After that she and her crew plunder 4 of the kings enemy ships and she was soon caught. She turned in the prizes including the ships all but one which takes and gets a crew and they plunder some more. Before she knows it she is being called a pirate and theres even a price on her head.
The picture of the ship above connects with the book when she gets her own ship, named the Emerald. It was 110 feet long just as the ship above is. Jacky used this ship to plunder and invade enemy ships such as France or Spain. She was caught and the captain that caught her ordered her now not so beloved Jaimy (she still didn't know that the girl that was with Jaimy at the horse race was his cousin) to sink her Emerald. She was devastated when her ship sank beneath the waves to rest forever on the bottom of the ocean. =]]
